Cedar Breaks

Description

This black-and-white photograph captures the immense scale of the natural amphitheater at Cedar Breaks, which drops over 2,000 feet from the rim of the Markagunt Plateau.

Geological Formations: The image highlights the "breaks"—the abrupt, deeply eroded canyons and ridges filled with hoodoos, fins, and spires. The high-contrast edit emphasizes the sharp, vertical erosion of the limestone walls.

High-Altitude Wilderness: Sitting at an elevation of over 10,000 feet, the rim is visible in the background, forested with spruce and fir trees that contrast with the barren, sculpted badlands below.

Atmospheric Depth: The vastness of the three-mile-wide amphitheater is conveyed through the layering of the ridges as they recede into the distance under a dramatic, cloud-filled sky.

Because of its extreme elevation, Cedar Breaks is often covered in snow for over half the year, making summer and early fall the best times for photography.
